Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty
The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
